Established in 1923, this bar has undergone various transformations, adapting to changing times while retaining its unique charm. The Sandy Hut's origins trace back to the Prohibition era, operating as a speakeasy called the "Horseshoe Tavern." After the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, it was renamed "The Hut," becoming a local socializing spot. In the mid-20th century, it reached its golden age, transforming into "The Wolf's Den," a stylish hub for jazz musicians and artists. By the early 2000s, The Wolf's Den had lost its luster, becoming a forgotten relic. In 2015, local bar owners Marcus Archambeault and Warren Boothby revived it, restoring the interior, preserving the original mural, and reintroducing the beloved Fat Burger. Today, the Sandy Hut stands as a testament to Portland's rich history, attracting a diverse crowd and serving as a popular local hangout. Its enduring legacy is a reminder that some things are worth preserving, enriching the vibrant tapestry of Portland's nightlife scene.

If you were in bar. Security guy checked your ID immediately and he puts the stamp on your wrist. When you got a stamp on your wrist they didn’t check your ID anymore that night. music sounds so loud. Very crowded place because they opened the bar at late night. Only few places opened at midnight. This place is a very popular. Beers were cold enough and fresh. Order some foods are difficult and tough because bar staffs were so busy and crowded. They seemed like a super busy.

In anticipation of a 100th Anniversary event, we dropped in for a preview on a day that would be less busy. WOW! Delicious, hearty food in great portions, and solid drinks. For our specific visit, compliments to the brunch chef (Aimee) and our bartender (Jordan).

We were there for their weekly summer hot rods and motorcycle cruise in. The car club that hosts it was not a kind group and wouldn't allow some cars to park if it didn't fit their caliber of vehicle. That needs to be stated on your flyer what you allow and not allow so I don't waste my time and gas. I might be back with one of the motorcycles but it really is just an old seedy dive bar catering to motorcycles.

The bartenders here are incredibly mean and do not expect you to stand up for yourself. Once you do say something back to them, they back down. I understand you’re busy and have a lot of customers to deal with, but everyone that walks into …

Stayed at the Lodge across the street and came over for a beer. Found a cool little bar full of eclectic folks listening to classic country. I'd be at this bar all the time if I lived in Portland.

Bartenders are more interested in talking/serving their friends then the customer next/in front of them. Overall the food and atmosphere were as expected. I just didn't want to leave regretting the large tip I prepaid.

Super super packed on weekends, but not too hard to get served. Pool table is sorta falling apart, but functional. Burger was pretty good, but a bit spendy for what it was.
